Common questions for newcomers
What is the first thing I need to do when I arrive in Norway?
The first thing you need to do is register with the Population Registry (Folkeregisteret) to get a personal number or D-number. You need this to open a bank account, get a mobile subscription and use public services.
Do I need BankID as a newcomer to Norway?
Yes, BankID is important for logging into Norwegian public services like NAV, the Tax Administration and Helsenorge. You can get BankID through your bank after you have received a personal number and opened a bank account.
How long does it take to get a personal number?
It varies. EU/EEA citizens who register with the police can get a D-number quickly. For a full personal number it can take a few weeks. Check updated processing times at skatteetaten.no.
Can I use a foreign bank card in Norway?
Yes, most shops and restaurants accept international bank cards. But to receive salary, pay bills and use Vipps you need a Norwegian bank account.
What languages can I get help in from public agencies?
Most public services are available in Norwegian and English. NAV and UDI also offer information in several languages. You can request an interpreter if needed for in-person visits.
Are there any deadlines I should be aware of?
Yes, you should register with the Population Registry as soon as possible after arrival. If you work, your employer must register you in the Employee Registry. The tax return deadline is April 30th each year.
