Register with the Population Registry

A personal number or D-number is the key to everything in Norway. You need it to open a bank account, get a job, and use public services.

What is the Population Registry?

The Population Registry is Norway's official register of everyone living in the country. When you register, you get a unique number used to identify you.

You need a valid passport, employment contract or student enrollment proof, and possibly a visa. Bring originals, not copies.

Personal number or D-number?

There are two types of personal numbers in Norway:

Personal number (11 digits)

For those staying in Norway for at least 6 months. This is the standard personal number.

D-number (11 digits)

For those staying in Norway less than 6 months, or who need identification without living here permanently.

Important to know

Your personal number is private and sensitive. Only share it with public authorities, employers and banks. Don't post it online or give it to strangers.
